What is SEO and what is it for

What SEO is, what changed in the definition when the results page stopped being ten links, and the four jobs it bundles together.

A site I operate went from 3,350 impressions in January 2026 to 98,352 in July, without buying a single ad or paying for a link. That is what SEO produces when it works, and also why it gets explained badly: seven months is a long time for a client and almost nothing for a channel that keeps producing afterwards without a cost per visit. Most of the confusion about what SEO is comes from comparing a channel that takes time with one that invoices the same day.

What is SEO and what is it for?

SEO is the work of being found in search without paying for the click. On a new site the whole job is getting indexed and answering something specific; on a mid-authority site it becomes internal linking and depth; on a consolidated site it is defence, because most of the ground is already held and the gains are marginal.

Quick answer

What people assumeWhat actually happens
SEO is free trafficNo cost per click, real cost in work
Results appear within a monthThe scale is quarters
It means repeating keywordsIt means answering one intent better than anyone
Ranking first brings visitsYou can rank first and get zero clicks
It is a project that finishesIt is maintenance: the index recalculates constantly

What kind of investment this is

The mental model that produces the most disappointment treats SEO as cheaper advertising. The two share a goal and behave in opposite ways in every other respect. The full comparison, timelines included, is in SEO vs Google Ads.

Advertising is bought by the unit. You pay, it appears, people arrive; you stop paying, they stop arriving. Spend and result sit next to each other in time, which is convenient to measure and expensive to sustain.

SEO behaves like construction. Months of investment with no visible return, then an asset that produces without a cost per visit until it stops being maintained. The practical consequence is that the worst moment to judge it is at the beginning, and the most common mistake is abandoning it just before the stretch where it compounds.

There is a third difference that decides many projects and rarely gets mentioned: advertising can be switched on Monday; SEO cannot be accelerated with budget. More work can happen in parallel, but indexing, accumulated authority and the algorithm's evaluation run on their own clock.

How it works, briefly

Search engines do three things in order, and a failure at any stage nullifies everything after it.

  1. Crawl. A program follows links and downloads pages.
  2. Index. It decides which pages to store and what they are about.
  3. Rank. Given a query, it selects and orders among what it has stored.

SEO work operates on all three layers: that the site can be crawled, that its pages deserve storing, and that among the stored ones yours answers best. Most of the serious problems an audit finds sit in the first two, which is where nobody looks because they do not appear in a rankings report. The mechanics are covered in the Spanish guide on why Google does not index your page.

What it is actually for

Capturing intent, not attention

This is the difference from social media. On a social platform you interrupt someone doing something else. In a search engine you appear in front of someone who just typed exactly what they want.

That is why search traffic converts better in most cases, and also why the volume is smaller: it only exists when somebody searches.

Accumulating rather than spiking

The progression in the opening was 3,350 impressions in January 2026, then 8,105, 25,294, 33,199, 37,559, 77,447 and 98,352 in July. Those seven months add up to 283,306 impressions, and the twelve months closing in August reach 313,356.

The monthly rate at the end of that period is neither of those totals: it is July's figure. That distinction sounds pedantic and is not. Presenting an accumulated total as a monthly rate is the most common reading error in this channel, and it produces expectations that do not survive contact with the next report.

Working at very different scales

The sites I operate record more than 300 million impressions and over 6.2 million clicks a year in Search Console. Between a site that is starting and that end of the range there are three or four orders of magnitude, and the tactics that work in each are not the same. Any SEO advice that does not say what size it applies to should be read with suspicion.

What SEO no longer guarantees

This section did not exist in the guides five years ago and it is now the most important one.

Appearing stopped implying being visited. Google AI Overviews appear in 43 % of searches according to Similarweb, and where they appear, organic click-through rate fell from 1.76 % to 0.61 % in Seer Interactive's study of 3,119 informational queries.

The damage is not evenly spread. In that same study, queries without an AI Overview also declined, from 2.72 % to 1.62 %. Part of what is being lost was not caused by the summaries at all, which is a nuance almost every article on this omits.

And ranking first was never a guarantee. In one audit I found a page holding position 1 with 124 impressions and zero clicks, because the title Google displayed did not contain the term people were typing. It was not a rankings problem, it was a clicks problem. That diagnosis is in the Spanish guide on ranking first without clicks.

What it costs

ScenarioMarket rangeWhat it covers
Small business, with an agency300 to 2,500 USD a month64 % of agencies charge under 1,000
One-off project500 to 5,000 USDAn audit or a bounded implementation
Doing it yourselfTime onlyFeasible for editorial judgment, riskier for technical work

When NOT to invest in SEO

When the product is not searched for. If nobody types queries related to what you sell, there is no demand to capture and the right work is creating demand through other channels.

When the business needs revenue this quarter. SEO does not arrive in time, and forcing it produces the timeline promises that characterize people who take money.

When the site cannot sustain the traffic it would bring. Sending visitors to a page that does not convert is paying to confirm a problem you already had.

What changed in the definition, and almost no guide says it

Beginner guides define SEO as appearing in the first results. That was accurate a few years ago and today it teaches an incomplete model from the first sentence, because the results page stopped being a list of ten links.

The figure that sums it up: zero-click searches went from 56 % to 69 % between May 2024 and May 2025, according to Similarweb's Generative AI Landscape 2026. Above the results there are now generated summaries, question blocks and snippets that answer without anyone leaving Google.

The practical consequence for someone starting out is not that SEO stopped working. It is that ranking and receiving visits stopped being the same thing. You can win a position and lose the click, and average position will not show you that.

There is also a split that decides a lot: the drop concentrates in informational queries while transactional ones hold up better, according to Seer Interactive, measured between June 2024 and September 2025. A business selling something is far less exposed than a blog explaining things, and that changes what is worth writing.

The four parts of the job

SEO is used as one word and it is four jobs with different economics.

Technical, which decides whether you exist for a search engine at all, and comes before everything else: basic SEO checklist and, when pages do not enter the index, why is my page not indexed.

Keywords and intent, which decide who you are writing for: free keyword research.

Content, where most of the work and most of the result live, together with how it is connected inside the site.

And authority, the slowest of the four.

If the business serves customers at an address, the order changes and most of it is decided in local SEO for small business and how to add your business to Google Maps.

What it costs and what each band buys is in SEO cost for a small business, and how the search results themselves changed is in answer engine optimization vs SEO.

What changes once a site has some history

The same word describes three very different jobs depending on where a site starts, and confusing them is why generic advice so often fails.

A new domain has one problem and it is not competition: it is being seen at all. Pages take weeks to enter the index, most queries are out of reach, and the only realistic ground is the narrow question nobody bothered to answer well. Almost everything written about link building and authority applies later, not now.

A site with some history has the opposite problem. It usually has more pages than it can support, several of them competing for the same query without anyone noticing, and a set of pages that receive no internal links at all. That is where the return is, and it costs nothing but attention.

A consolidated site is playing defence. The gains are marginal, the losses are not, and the work shifts to keeping what already ranks from ageing out: updating what changed, removing what no longer earns its place, and watching the queries that used to convert.

The mistake that costs the most is applying the third playbook to the first situation, which is what happens when a small business hires a proposal written for a large one.

Mistakes that repeat

How the measurement side works, and which report actually tells you what is happening, is in how to set up Search Console.

Data and transparency

That zero-click searches went from 56 % to 69 % between May 2024 and May 2025 comes from Similarweb's Generative AI Landscape 2026. That the CTR drop concentrates in informational queries while transactional ones hold up better comes from Seer Interactive, measured between June 2024 and September 2025. No percentage is derived from those figures here, which is the error this blog corrected in its own corpus.

The monthly progression from 3,350 to 98,352 impressions belongs to westchesterride.com, a site I own, verified through the Search Console API on 2026-08-10; 283,306 is the seven-month accumulated figure and 313,356 the twelve-month one, neither of which is a monthly rate. The portfolio figures of more than 300 million impressions and over 6.2 million clicks a year cover the sites I operate including client work, measured from 2025-08-06 to 2026-08-06 with a read-only credential; client sites are not named. The CTR figures come from Seer Interactive's study published 4 November 2025 covering 3,119 informational queries across 42 organizations. The 43 % AI Overview presence comes from Similarweb's Generative AI Landscape 2026 report. The position-1 page with zero clicks is client work and rounded. Market prices come from SE Ranking's SEO pricing survey published 13 December 2024, covering 260 agencies across North America, Europe and Oceania, whose authors note the sample may not reach statistical significance; in it 64 % of agencies charge under 1,000 USD a month.

What this changes

Almost everyone arrives asking how long SEO takes to work. It is the wrong question, and not because of impatience.

The right one is what share of your demand passes through a search engine. If your customers find you through referrals, a trade show or a social feed, SEO can be a secondary channel however well it is executed. If they type exactly what you sell into Google, then you are already losing those queries every day, and the only thing deciding the timeline is when you start. That answer takes an afternoon to find in data you already have, and almost nobody looks before hiring.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work?

There is no timeline that can be promised, and anyone promising one is selling something they cannot deliver. As a real reference, a site I own went from 3,350 monthly impressions in January 2026 to 98,352 in July, which is seven months of continuous work. Sites with existing authority start faster, and new domains usually start slower.

Is SEO free traffic?

No. It is traffic without a cost per click, which is different. The cost sits in the work: auditing, content, technical fixes and maintenance. What distinguishes it from advertising is that the cost does not repeat every time someone arrives, so the cost per visit falls over time instead of staying fixed.

Does SEO still work with AI in search results?

It works, with caveats that matter. AI Overviews appear in 43 % of Google searches according to Similarweb, and organic click-through rate for queries showing them fell from 1.76 % to 0.61 %. The same study found queries without summaries also declined, from 2.72 % to 1.62 %, so part of the fall was happening regardless. Generative engines also select sources from what is already indexed.

What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO works to appear in the unpaid results and its cost sits in the work. SEM buys position through ads and its cost sits in each click. SEM can be switched on and off the same day, while SEO takes months to start and then keeps producing without paying per visit.

Can I do SEO myself?

The editorial judgment usually yes: understanding what your customer searches for and answering it better is work for whoever knows the business. The technical layer is where a small wrong decision has disproportionate consequences, such as a robots.txt rule that prevents Google from reading a noindex tag, and that is where an external review tends to pay for itself.

Most sites do not have a ranking problem

They have a what-happens-next problem. You can rank first and still sell nothing. The diagnostic looks at both and tells you which one is costing you money.
