How much does SEO cost for a small business

What you actually buy at each price level, the four lines of an SEO budget, and why two proposals at the same price are not comparable.

The market range runs from 300 to 2,500 dollars a month, which is a factor of more than eight between the two ends. No other marketing line item has that spread, and it is not explained by quality. It is explained by the fact that the same three letters cover jobs that have nothing in common: updating a Google listing once a month, and holding together the architecture of a three-thousand-page site. This article separates what you get in each band, and where you get nothing.

How much does SEO cost for a small business?

It depends on scope, not on the vendor. A new local business with an unworked profile needs a few hundred dollars a month; a mid-authority site running content and technical work sits in the common agency band; a consolidated national project runs far higher. A published survey found 64 % of agencies charge under 1,000 USD monthly.

What kind of purchase this is

The mental model that produces the worst decisions is comparing proposals by their number. Two 1,500-dollar retainers can be opposite jobs, and the difference never appears in the price.

SEO is mostly the time of someone who knows what to look at. There is no raw material, no inventory and almost no software that could not be substituted. When a price drops sharply, what drops is not the margin: it is the hours, or the seniority of whoever spends them. A 400-dollar retainer cannot contain twenty hours of experienced work, because the arithmetic does not allow it.

Which produces the question almost nobody asks: how many hours a month, and done by whom? A provider who cannot answer that is selling a package, not a service.

Why six months, and why it is not a sales tactic

Serious monthly engagements ask for a six-month minimum, and it sounds like a lock-in. The reason is a sequence.

The first month goes to auditing and fixing whatever blocks everything else. The second and third produce the changes. From the fourth, movement starts to be measurable, and even then the index has to recalculate. A three-month contract ends exactly when the work becomes measurable, so the client pays for the expensive part without reaching the part that returns.

As a reference for how long a site starting from nothing takes: one I own went from 3,350 monthly impressions in January 2026 to 98,352 in July. Seven months. No budget compresses that, because what takes time is not the work but the search engine's evaluation.

What the invisible line item is

The prices above are what the market charges. The ones that follow are what it costs to have skipped the diagnosis.

In an audit of a 312-page site I found 35 orphan pages carrying roughly 180,000 impressions a quarter that the internal structure never reached, and the two highest-impression pages on the whole site had no incoming internal links at all. Seventy-nine percent of the internal links were piled into the footer.

That site had been paying for new content while the content it already had could not be found. That is the real hidden cost in this budget, and it is almost always larger than the audit that would have caught it.

How to compare two proposals

Five questions that separate a proposal from a catalogue.

  1. How many hours a month, and whose? No answer means no service.
  2. What happens in month one? If it does not include auditing, they will produce blind.
  3. How is it measured? If the answer is "rankings", expect trouble: average position mixes intents and says almost nothing.
  4. What if six months pass with no result? An honest answer exists and it is not "that does not happen".
  5. Do they promise specific ranking timelines? If yes, the conversation ends there. It is not demonstrable, and it is the promise made by people who take money.

That third point deserves a note. Ranking reports without a fixed cohort of queries are decoration, and the reasoning behind that is in the Spanish guide on reading Search Console without drawing false conclusions.

When NOT to hire anyone

When nobody searches for what you sell. If the queries do not exist, there is no demand to capture and the money works harder creating demand elsewhere.

When the business needs revenue this quarter. SEO does not arrive in time, and forcing it produces exactly the timeline promises listed above.

When the site does not convert. Sending traffic to a page that does not sell is paying to confirm a problem you already had.

Declaration of interest

I sell these services, so here are my own prices, published and not negotiated by volume:

Monthly operationFrom 750 USD a month, six-month minimum

The diagnostic is deliberately cheap and deliberately independent: it exists to tell you whether the rest is worth doing, and sometimes the answer is that it is not.

Why none of the numbers you find will agree

Before trusting any band, including this one, it is worth looking at the market for this information.

Searching for what SEO costs on 12 August 2026, the first results gave different figures with no overlap in method, and none named where its number came from. There is one published survey with a declared sample, and its most useful result is not the band: SE Ranking surveyed 260 agencies across North America, Europe and Oceania in December 2024, with its own authors warning the sample may not reach statistical significance, and found that 64 % charge under 1,000 USD a month.

That puts the centre of gravity lower than most articles suggest, and it is the one figure here with a name, a date and a sample attached.

There is one point almost everyone agrees on, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion: below a certain floor what is being sold is not the service. Not because nobody can work cheaply, but because the minimum time of someone who knows what they are doing has a cost, and below it what arrives is automated reports, unreviewed content and directory submissions.

What each line of the budget buys

An SEO budget is not one service but four, and knowing which one dominates explains why two proposals at the same price are not comparable.

Content, which is the largest line in almost every case and the one that builds the asset. What separates a page that earns its keep from one that fills a slot is judgement, not word count.

Technical, heavy at the start and light afterwards, with the order of operations in basic SEO checklist.

Local, if the business serves customers at an address. It has the best return per hour of the four, and it is covered in local SEO for small business and how to add your business to Google Maps.

And links, the slowest and most expensive line, which is why it rarely belongs in a first-year budget.

Before comparing numbers it helps to know what a proposal should contain, which is in what an SEO proposal should include, and how the result will be judged, in how to set up Search Console.

Data and transparency

The survey figures come from SE Ranking, published 13 December 2024, 260 responses from North America, Europe and Oceania, including its authors' own warning that the sample may not reach statistical significance. Its most useful result is that 64 % of agencies charge under 1,000 USD monthly. That the first results for this query give bands with no named source was checked on 12 August 2026.

The market ranges of 300 to 2,500 USD a month with an agency and 500 to 5,000 USD per one-off project come from SE Ranking's SEO pricing survey published 13 December 2024, covering 260 agencies across North America, Europe and Oceania, whose authors note the sample may not reach statistical significance; in it 64 % of agencies charge under 1,000 USD a month, and are given as ranges rather than single figures on purpose. The audit numbers (312 pages, 35 orphan pages, roughly 180,000 impressions a quarter, 79 % of internal links in the footer) come from my own work; it is client work, so the site is not named and the figures are rounded. The progression from 3,350 to 98,352 monthly impressions belongs to westchesterride.com, which I own, verified through the Search Console API on 2026-08-10; 98,352 is the highest single month, not a total. My own service prices are the published ones. Verified as of August 2026.

What this changes

Almost everyone arrives asking what it costs. That is the least informative number in the conversation.

The question that decides the outcome is different: how much of what you have already published cannot be found. In the sites I have audited, the answer has been uncomfortable often enough that it reorders the budget, turning a plan to write more into a plan to fix what exists, which costs less and returns sooner. It is worth knowing that before signing twelve months of production, if only because the order of those two things changes the entire invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business spend on SEO per month?

Most small business retainers fall between 300 and 2,500 dollars a month, and where a specific business lands depends on the size of the site and how much sustained work it needs rather than on ambition. Below roughly 500 dollars a month the hours available cannot cover both content and technical work, so what is realistically purchased is light maintenance.

Why do SEO contracts require six months?

Because of the sequence, not the sales process. The first month goes to auditing and unblocking, the next two to implementing changes, and from the fourth month results start becoming measurable while the search index recalculates. A three-month contract terminates precisely when the work would begin to show, leaving the client paying for the expensive phase without reaching the returning one.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

It depends entirely on what "cheap" excludes. SEO is mostly skilled time, so a lower price means fewer hours or less experienced hours, not a better margin. At the bottom of the market what is usually purchased is an automated report and an invoice. A cheap independent audit, by contrast, is often the highest-return purchase available.

How do I know if an SEO proposal is honest?

Ask how many hours a month are included and who performs them, what specifically happens in month one, and how success will be measured. A proposal that promises specific ranking positions or timelines should end the conversation, because neither is demonstrable and both are the standard promise of people who take money without delivering.

Can I do SEO myself instead of paying?

The editorial judgment yes, usually, because nobody understands your customers better than you do. The technical layer is where a small wrong decision has disproportionate consequences, such as a robots.txt rule that prevents Google from reading a noindex tag. A one-off external review of that layer tends to pay for itself even when everything else stays in-house.

Most sites do not have a ranking problem

They have a what-happens-next problem. You can rank first and still sell nothing. The diagnostic looks at both and tells you which one is costing you money.
